How to Choose the Right Handmade Soap for Your Skin Type
Not all soap is created equal, and the right bar for your skin type can make the difference between a wash that leaves your skin comfortable and one that leaves it tight, dry, or irritated. Here's how to pick a bar that actually works with your skin, not against it.
Why Skin Type Matters When Choosing Soap
Every skin type reacts differently to cleansing. What feels perfectly balanced on oily skin can leave dry or sensitive skin feeling stripped, while a rich, buttery bar made for dry skin might feel heavy on oilier skin. Knowing your skin type first makes it much easier to pick ingredients that support it instead of fighting it.
Dry Skin
Look for bars built around moisturizing oils and butters, such as shea butter, cocoa butter, olive oil, or coconut oil. These help replenish the skin's moisture barrier rather than stripping it further. Soaps with retained glycerin are especially helpful here, since glycerin draws moisture to the skin as you wash.
Oily Skin
Oily skin still needs gentle cleansing, not harsh stripping. Plant-based bars clean effectively without leaving skin feeling overly tight, which can actually trigger more oil production. Ingredients like clay or charcoal are popular choices for drawing out excess oil while keeping the wash gentle.
Combination Skin
Combination skin, with an oilier T-zone and drier cheeks, does best with a balanced formula rather than one designed exclusively for oily or dry skin. A gentle, plant-based bar with light moisture tends to work well across both areas without over-drying or over-conditioning either one.
Sensitive Skin
For sensitive skin, simplicity matters most. Look for soaps with short ingredient lists and soothing additions like colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, or a light, natural scent rather than heavy fragrance. Fewer, gentler ingredients mean fewer chances for irritation.
Whatever your skin type, it's always worth patch testing a new soap first: wash a small area, like your inner arm, and wait 24 hours to check for any redness or irritation before using it on your face or body more broadly.
Why Handmade Soap Feels Different
One of the biggest differences between handmade and commercial soap comes down to glycerin. During the soap-making process, glycerin forms naturally as a byproduct, and it's a humectant that helps skin hold onto moisture. Many commercial soap makers remove this glycerin to sell separately, leaving behind a bar that can feel more drying. Soap that's fine handmade in small batches, like ours at Gracie & Co. 1942, keeps that natural glycerin in the bar, along with real oils and butters, rather than synthetic fillers.
Finding Your Bar
Once you know your skin type, choosing a soap becomes much simpler: match the ingredients to what your skin actually needs, patch test if you're trying something new, and give it a week or two to see how your skin responds. A good bar should leave your skin feeling clean and comfortable, never tight or stripped.
