Preservatives in Bath Products: Which Ones Need Them?
People sometimes ask me, "Are your products preservative-free?" The honest answer is: it depends on the product. Here's why.
Why Preservatives Exist
Mold and bacteria love water. Any product that has water in it can grow germs over time. A preservative keeps that from happening, which keeps you safe.
Products That Usually Don't Need Them
- Bar soap. Real soap is a tough place for germs to grow. Our soaps don't contain parabens.
- Powders. No water, no problem. Our Fruit Enzyme Facial Cleanser is preservative-free. You add the water when you use it.
- Solid bars with no water, like lotion bars.
Products That Usually Do
- Lotions and creams with water in them.
- Scrubs and whipped products that may get water splashed into the jar.
- Liquid washes.
A product with water and no preservative can grow mold, even if you can't see it yet. So in these products, a preservative is a good thing.
What About Parabens?
Parabens are one kind of preservative. Some people choose to avoid them. We don't use parabens. There are other preservative options that work well.
How to Keep Your Products Fresh
- Use dry hands or a spoon to scoop from jars.
- Keep lids closed.
- Store products out of hot sun.
- If something smells off or changes color, toss it.
